Korean War veteran throws first pitch at Legion game

Posted

The Rev. Jerry Moon, a veteran of the Korean War, threw out the first pitch at the American Legion baseball game Monday night between Fayette and Atlanta. The game was played at Central Methodist University’s recently renovated Estes Field.

At 92, Mr. Moon is thought to be the oldest living veteran in Howard County.

“I was honored to be able to throw out the first pitch,” Rev. Moon said. “It’s a beautiful field.”

He was never on a baseball team but played softball during his service.

“I can’t remember the last time I held a baseball,” he joked after tossing the first pitch to Fayette player Kaleb Friebe.

Surrounded by family members and friends, Rev. Moon fired an overhand pitch to Friebe before receiving a round of applause.

Friebe, who will be a high school junior in the fall, helps take care of Mr. Moon’s yard, and asked him to throw out the first pitch.

American Legion Post 273 members presented the colors, and a Fayette High School saxophone trio performed the National Anthem.

Missouri Representative Tim Taylor (R-Boonville) was also on hand to witness the first pitch.

Fayette went on to fall 13-3 to Atlanta.
