Five generations of the Wilmsmeyer family turned out to celebrate the designation of the family business as a Century Farm on Thursday. A plaque and sign were presented to the family by the University of Missouri Extension office of Howard County.
To earn the designation, a farm must be held in the same family for at least 100 years. The Wilmsmeyers have done that and then some. Chris and Amanda Wilmsmeyer began farming this land in 1912.
The farm, which now spans more than 180 acres of Missouri River bottomland near Franklin in southern Howard County was passed down to Martin and Esther Wilmsmeyer in 1954. Their sons, Larry and Donnie, took over the farm in the 1970s. Now Larry’s sons, Kirk and Kent, run the family farm.
And while the fifth generation is are currently between the ages of eight months and eight years, it is hoped the family tradition will continue in the decades to come.
Rosemary Wilmsmeyer, who is married to Larry Wilmsmeyer, said the designation is quite meaningful. Her family’s land is now apart of the Wilmsmeyer farm.
