Quint's slam lifts Falcons to postseason win

Fayette had just two hits in Wednesday’s district quarterfinal, but two hits were all that was needed in a 4-2 win over Eugene.

The Falcons loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth, but it looked like the Lady Eagles might escape when Hannah Quint fell behind 0-2 in the count with two outs.

“This time I was like, ‘just wait for the right pitch,’ and she gave me one down the middle, a little low,” Quint said. “I finally got my hands in the right spot, and was ready to swing.”

Quint hit a fly ball that carried over the center field fence for a grand slam. It was the first time Quint had hit the ball out of the park at any level.

“I was very surprised,” she said.

Her clutch hit gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead.

“It felt good,” Quint said. “I knew that they needed me, and it was time for me to do something.”

Eugene finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Falcons turned a 1-3-2 double play with Madi Lawson throwing out a runner at home to limit the damage.

“I saw a lot of guts and a lot of determination,” coach Mike James said. “I just saw a team that wanted to play another night and decided they weren’t going to let tonight be the end.”

Fayette had just one error in the game. It came with two outs in the first inning and didn’t cost the Falcons any runs.

“I was proud of the way they battled,” James said. “Batting will come and go. Luckily Hannah came through for us, but when your bats are struggling, you’ve got to play better defense and you’ve got to pitch better and we’ve been doing that lately and staying in games.”

Jordyn Ball allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

“Jordyn has been a rock for us all year and I thought she really kind of ramped up her game a little bit even tonight,” James said.

Addison Newell reached base on a dropped third strike in the first inning, but Fayette didn’t have another baserunner until Newell hit a fly ball to left and reached on an error in the fourth inning. Megan Lewis singled and Bella Asbury drew a one-out walk, loading the bases for Quint. Lawson drew a walk and stole third base in the seventh inning.

Eugene finished the season 13-7. Fayette (18-5-1) advances to Thursday’s district semifinal against Tolton (19-3).
