New Franklin homered twice in its first four at bats on Saturday, during a 16-6 win over Jamestown in the first game of the sixth annual Terry Early Softball Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs finished second out of the three teams in the New Franklin pool. Crocker beat New Franklin 5-4 and Jamestown 12-11 to finish on top.

New Franklin scored nearly half of its run total for the day in the first inning against Jamestown.

Abby Maupin led off the first inning with a home run to left. Alexia Sprick singled to center and Isabelle Matney reached on an error to put two on for Kayce Hundley.

Hundley crushed a ball over the left field fence to put New Franklin ahead 4-0 before an out was recorded.

Kaylen Sprick drove in two runs with a single. Alexia Sprick drew a walk with the bases loaded and then Kaylen Sprick scored on a passed ball.

Madison Painter scored on a sac fly from Carly Dorson to put New Franklin ahead 10-0.

Maupin, Matney, Hundley and Alexia Sprick each had two hits in the win.

“We jumped on them early with some big hits in the first inning, and we did enough to win after that,” New Franklin coach Ross Dowell said. “We need to work on finishing teams off better, but this was a good win though over a district opponent.”

The 5-4 loss to Crocker dropped New Franklin back to .500 at 9-9 for the season.

The Lady Bulldogs scored the first two runs of the game, but Crocker led 4-2 heading into the sixth.

Sophia Held led off the inning with a single and Jayna Matthews pulled New Franklin within a run, ending up on second base with a ground ball into left field. Matthews took third base on a passed ball and scored the tying run on Kaylyn Sprick’s ground ball out.

Crocker took advantage of two errors in the seventh to walk off with the win.

“We had a chance with bases loaded in the top of seventh, no outs, and could not score,” New Franklin coach Ross Dowell said.

“We never got anything going offensively. Hit the ball hard, just at the Crocker defense.”

Held gave up three earned runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings.

Matthews was 2-3 at the plate with two RBI. Matney and Alexia Sprick had two hits again in the second game. Matney drove in the first run of the game with a double.

Next up, New Franklin will face Sturgeon in the district semifinal on Wednesday.
