New county officials sworn in

Four new, and one re-elected, Howard County officials were sworn into office on Dec. 31. Sheriff Jeff Oswald, Coroner Trisha Clark, Public Administrator Lisa Asbury, and Commissioners Jeff Stockhorst and Mat Freese took the oaths of office and assumed their duties that day.

Oswald, the former Fayette police chief, defeated two-term incumbent Mike Neal for the county’s top law enforcement office. Clark won the election for coroner against incumbent Frank Flaspohler who held the job for 28 years.

Asbury was unopposed in her bid for re-election. As Public Administrator, Asbury helps look after those who cannot take care of themselves. She has 91 clients throughout the state.

Stockhorst faced no opposition for Eastern District Commissioner in November after handily winning the Republican Primary against Dean Fuemmeler and Blake Spry in August. Freese defeated Democrat Charlie Polson for Western District Commissioner in November.

County Assessor Woody McCutcheon was also re-elected in November. He will take the oath of office in September.

Howard County Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Deeds Charles Flaspohler swore in four of the five new officials and welcomed them to “the family.”

“I’ve been here a long time, and it’s truly been a family.”

Four days prior, a reception was held in the same room for the four outgoing county officials. “They leave with 81 years of experience,” Flaspohler said to the new officials. “It’s all new, but you’ll get there.”

Freese publicly thanked outgoing commissioners Richard “Dragon” Conrow and Howard McMillan for their years of service. “Without them, we wouldn’t be in the shape that we are right now.”
