Fayette girls start 2-1 on season

Posted

Going into the consolation game of the 90th Glasgow Invitational Basketball Tournament the Lady Falcons of Fayette were sitting at 1-1 on the season after Thursday night’s second-round win over Westran. Kylea Hoover led Falcon scorers in that Wednesday evening win which gave Coach Brian Spielbauer his first win in his return to coaching after seven years.

“It’s been a long time between wins,” said Spielbauer Wednesday night. “It’s been about 16 years since we’ve had a winning season here at Fayette for the girls. I counted yesterday we’ve got four girls that have played significant minutes on varsity.

“We’ve got a lot of new players. There’s going to be a lot of nights, a lot of moments, when things just don’t go right.

“But you know what, we let them back into it. We were up 12-3, they took a 14-12 lead but we kept at it, we kept fighting then we found a way to win. W’ell probably have a lot of wins like that this year where it doesn’t look pretty all the time. I’m glad the girls fought through it. They need to enjoy this one.”

The Lady Falcons kept the pedal down in Saturday’s consolation game as they developed an early lead and never looked back. Leading 22-12 at the half, Fayette continued to pour it on with  junior Jordyn Ball hitting for a game-high 13 points and senior Kylea Hoover scoring 11 as the Lady Falcons got the win 43-29.

A very hoarse coach Spielbauer, after the game said that his players made a big step from game two to game three on defense and focused and talked and really made it difficult for Slater to get shots off.

Spielbauer said his team worked on making defensive stops and preventing easy buckets. “We talked about really trying to stop layups and free throws.”

Fayette made nine free throws on the night, five of those from Hoover, while Slater attempted nine.

“I’m just excited about where we’re at after three short games and now we’ve got a big game against New Franklin on Tuesday and we’ll see if we can make up for our loss.”

Fayette was scheduled to host New Franklin for its home opener Tuesday. Tipoff is at 6:30 p.m. at Fayette High School.
