A New Franklin man is in the Howard County jail on charges involving sexual intercourse with a child less than 14-years of age that allegedly took place in February 2018.
Lance S. Johnson, 51, is being held without bond on charges of first-degree statutory rape with a person under the age of 14, an unclassified felony; first-degree sexual abuse, a Class B felony; and third-degree child molestation with a child below the age of 14, a Class B felony.
Johnson faces up to life in prison if convicted for the charge of first-degree statutory rape and up to 15 years each for the charges of sexual abuse and child molestation. However, given Johnson’s past convictions, he faces enhanced sentencing for being a prior and persistent felony offender. In 2012 he pleaded guilty to felony forgery in Cooper County for which he received a sentence of two years probation in lieu of a suspended sentence of five years in prison. In 2006 he pleaded guilty to felony DWI-Alcohol-Persistent Offender, felony resisting arrest by fleeing, and felony operating a motor vehicle on a highway with a revoked license. Johnson was sentenced to four years on each of those counts.
Johnson has also served prison time for passing bad checks.
Johnson was scheduled to appear before Judge Mason Gebhardt in Howard County Court for a bond hearing as this newspaper went to Tuesday morning. No attorney for Johnson has been listed.
