A word from the new guy...

Posted

Just wanted to take a little time to introduce myself. Since November 1, I have been working as the sports editor of The Fayette Advertiser. I am most honored to be in this position.

I wear many hats in my life. Some of you may know me as the Mayor of Fayette, some may know me simply as a friend, while others know me as Barbie’s husband, Andy’s dad, or Ben and Payton’s Papoh. We actually have two other sons and six other grandchildren spread from Alaska to Kentucky, but for those of you living in and around the Fayette area, it’s Andy and Ben and Payton you’ll associate to me.

Years ago, while a student at Southwest Baptist University, I fell in to a position with the SBU Omnibus, a student written newspaper on campus. Very quickly, I fell in love with writing about sports and felt being a sportswriter was something I would enjoy as a career. Well, as it so often does, life happened. My wife of now 38 years and I got married then started having kids and those kids had to be fed. The sportswriting career fell by the wayside and I began a life spent for the most part in Columbia working for the police department and municipal court before being able to retire three years ago. Just about a month ago, I got word of the opening at the Advertiser and talked the owner into letting me give it a shot.

The newspaper world is different than it was almost 40 years ago so I ask you to bear with me. My predecessor, Jeff Yoder, set the bar pretty high and, frankly, I’m old and technology is new. I’m trying to learn though, and it seems to be growing on me a bit. We’ll see.

If you see me at a game here or there, be sure to speak, I’ll be the guy looking like he’s wondering what a camera actually does.
